Frequently Asked Questions about the Caucus of Color and the Steering Committee Who are the Steering Committee members of the Caucus of Color? Caucus of Color Steering Committee members are made up of young people of color who work full and/or part-time, attend school, care for their families, and run businesses. Simply put -- we are a group of active and committed young professionals and students who want to reshape the Democratic Party and make the Party be inclusive for our communities. We are Black, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim, Mid-Eastern. Some of us work in politics, others dont. Some are registered voters, others aren't... but all of us are committed to working toward the message of "empowering young leaders of color today". What is the responsibilities of Steering Committee members? Not much. We dont have monthly meetings or conference calls like other political groups. Nor do we require our leaders to pay money into the organization. All we ask of our steering committee members is to participate in our planned events, help spread the word through email and word-of-mouth, give of their time and working with other steering members. You might be asked to make some phone calls or send emails to your address book... you might draft an article to be submitted in our newsletter... you might use your connections to help us get donations to offset costs or get us free space to host an event... or, it might be your turn to guard the fishbowl at one of our many social mixers!! We ask that each steering member promote the good work of this organization, however not to your detriment... on occasion, we may all get together and have dinner to get to know each other and talk about our goals as a group or have a conference call... not often, though! We know folks are busy with life, love and work... so, we dont want to add to that pile. Just serve as you can, when you can. How old do you have to be to serve on the Steering Committee? Under the NY State Young Democrats Constitution, you must be under the age of 36, HOWEVER the Caucus of Color sets its own rules (we're rebels!!). There is no age limit to serve as a steering committee member to the Caucus. You can be young... or, young at heart!! I have an idea for an event or activity. Who should I contact? First, contact the Chair... then, shoot an email to the steering committee (or, if you're lazy... draft the email language and send it to me, and I'll forward it). Ask for volunteers to help you organize your event or activity and you're on your way!! How big is the Steering Committee? So far, our Steering Committee is about 32 people... but, our overall, Caucus of Color membership is low as we are reorganizing. We need your help to get the word out about this amazing new group and encourage people to join. Membership is FREE for any young person of color. OK... I have some friends... what do they need to join? To be a member, you must be a registered Democrat or intend to register as a Democrat at the earliest opportunity. To be a member in good standing, which entitles you to vote in Caucus elections, you must complete a membership form and attend at least 5 Caucus events (we dont care which!!). Do I have to be a member in good standing to be on the Steering Committee? Since we are reorganizing right now, NO. However, you should try to aim for the 5 Caucus events clause in the membership agreement!! I'd like to work on a publication which presents Democrats' viewpoints on policy and politics. Can I do this with the Steering Committee? Hell to the YES! Interested in being a writer, graphical artist, or copy editor? Contact us at 646-530-8308. OK. I'm sold... so, what next?!? 1) Sign up by checking the checking the STEERING COMMITTEE box on the membership form. 2) Participate in our activities. They'll be advertised via email, over the mailing list, and on the website. 3) Think of some events YOU'D like the Caucus to do... and, start planning!! |
